Written some 30 years ago, this material gives a whole new perspective to one of the mysteries surrounding the Gurdjieff work.In particular it tries to approach (and I believe succeeds) the question of internal development at the level that man is supposed to arrive at after many years of study and effort. Regarding the levels of man, numbering 1 to 7, some have suggested that the level of man #5 is where normalcy begins for a real human being; that we have, in a sense, de-volved into men at the levels of 1-3 over the centuries for a variety of reasons, and that with the Gurdjieff/4th way work ideas we have the opportunity to reverse this ‘retardation’ in order to return to a former state of being, and to continue our growth from there.
The author, who was immersed in 'the work' for many years, at one point was given the task to write about the understanding he had come to regarding the 4th way ideas of becoming 'man #4, and from there 'making the jump' to man #5, without using the usual work terminology and jargon.
At times the treatise has the feeling of a channeled piece of work that is blended with what some scientific types might characterize as concepts from the world of quantum physics. Whatever the case it offers new insight to old questions.
Those on 4th way and Gurdjieff forum sites to this day spend much energy and time arguing about the difficulties or impossibilities of becoming man #4, or man #5. Some claim to have already arrived at these vaunted levels of development, while others chastise them for their arrogance, and fantasy. Perhaps the new perspective on this topic that this book offers will help to demystify the becoming process, and allow those who have labored for many years to claim what they have rightfully earned through all their efforts.
